Become a member of the BSI

Please read the information below about how to become a new member of the BSI or if you wish to renew your membership after a break in membership of two or more years.

If you are an existing BSI member, please log in and renew your membership.

1. Before you apply to become a member

Please take the time to look at the aims and history of the BSI as well as the BSI Rules. If you have not already done so, you may also wish to look at the benefits of membership to ensure you take full advantage of the many services available to BSI members.

2. Apply for membership

Download a membership application form and complete as indicated.

If you were a past member of the BSI and there has been a gap in your membership of two or more years, please include your past BSI membership number (if known) or any changes in your name to assist with linking your application with your past records.

All UK members may put the cost of their Society subscription against their tax liability and thus reduce the real costs of being a member substantially.

Direct Debit Discount
Our preferred method of payment is by direct debit as this is the most cost effective way for us to process your subscription, greatly reducing administrative costs to the Society. You will receive a discount if you pay by Direct Debit. Note that direct debit can only be set up with UK banks. Overseas members who have a bank account in the UK may wish to contact our Membership Administrator to see if this option is possible.

Concessionary membership
Full-time students who are residents of the UK may apply to pay a reduced membership subscription. UK residents with a gross annual income of less than £15,000 may also apply. Please download and complete a concessionary membership certificate and submit this with your membership application.

Continuity of membership
Continuous membership is required for some membership benefits (e.g. travel awards) and members are therefore reminded of the need to renew their membership annually. If there has been a break in continuity, please speak to our Membership Administrator to discuss the circumstances and the options available.

3. Complete the relevant payment authority

Download and complete the relevant form for payment - Direct Debit or Credit/Debit Card Authority. Please note that banks require an original signature on a Direct Debit authority and so this form cannot be sent by fax or email to the BSI office.

4. Send all necessary forms to the BSI

As soon as your application is received and processed, you will start to receive any communications relevant to your level of membership and your specified areas of interest. A formal welcome from the BSI Board of Trustees will also be sent to you within one month of the receipt of your application.

5. Register to use the BSI website

If you have not already done so, please take the time to register as a new user of our website. The username and password you select will be linked to your membership records and will allow you to update your details, access members-only information and to renew your membership on line.

Please allow one working day for your request to be processed and manually linked to your membership records.

6. Any questions

Please contact our Membership Administrator if you have any questions relating to membership.
