BSI Summer School 2011

Accommodation

Our speakers will stay at the nearby Manor of Plas Llanmihangel, a beautifully restored Grade1 listed manor offering cosy accommodation and first class cuisine in unbeatable surroundings.

Plas Llanmihangel is hidden away in a quiet valley in the beautiful Vale of Glamorgan and is a tranquil place away from the rush and stress of modern living. This picturesque spot has changed little since the 16th century - trees grace the hillside, and the narrow lanes that lead from the outside world bring one to this secret glen.

The manor house itself looks down over the little 13th century church with its holy well and across to the great barn. The house has the remains of a lovely 17th century Yew tree garden and the whole site is entirely surrounded by undulating countryside.

Summer School Attendees

The castle and the surrounding grounds house the United World College of the Atlantic, also known as Atlantic College, a prestigious international boarding school founded in 1962.  The community at Atlantic College is divided into seven house communities in purpose-built houses and only offers basic, youth hostel type accomodation.  For this reason, the students and postdocs attending the Summer School will share a room with up to three other attendees.  Overall the facilities are relatively simple, and attendants will need to use communal showers and bathrooms located on each corridor.  We are aware of the inconvenience this may cause to some people and only hope that the unique scenery of the venue together with the exciting scientific (and social) programme more than just compensates for this lack of comfort.

Some attendees may also want to register as non-residents and organise their own accomodation.

The following list of nearby hotels and B&Bs is by no means comprehensive.  Further addresses and details about places of interest can be obtained from www.valeofglamorgan.gov.uk and other websites.
