Facilities

A number of facilities is open to all attendees and speakers throughout the course of the Summer School.

Recreational and Study Facilities

For time out there is the popular Social Centre, tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, and indoor and outdoor swimming pools.

For study, there are quiet rooms in each student house and the extensive 25,000 book Library.  For a virtual tour of the Library please click here.

Terraced Gardens

The size, complexity, state of preservation and rarity make the gardens of St Donat's Castle of outstanding value.  They consist of five terraces to the south of the castle, each with stone walls and steps, descending 40 metres from the castle to the sea.

The two top terraces mainly consist of lawned areas.  The third is an Edwardian re-creation of a Tudor garden.  The lower terraces, which are sited side by side, are the Rose Garden to the east and the Blue Garden to the west. These have Edwardian layouts set within the Tudor structure.

Two walled deer parks attached to the castle also remain and an unusual tower stands in the wooded grounds.

Welsh Heritage Coastline

St Donat's Castle is situated in middle of the unspoilt protected Heritage Coastline of the Vale of Glamorgan with its dramatic plunging cliffs and tiny secluded coves.  The picturesque countryside of rolling hills and wooded valleys is steeped in history, beauty and culture, and peppered with legendary villages, historic towns, fine gardens, ancient churches, and medieval castles.  Just 10 minutes walk from the castle is the beautiful lighthouse of Nash Point.
