Programme
The programme of the BSI Summer School 2011 can be accessed on our website at http://www.immunology.org/summer-school-2011/programme

Lectures, Tutorials, Workshops
All main lectures including the opening keynote lecture on Tuesday 5 July will be given in the Tythe Barn, St Donat’s Arts Centre.  The Flow Cytometry workshop on Thursday 7 July will be held in the Tythe Barn, St Donat’s Arts Centre.  Four parallel tutorials A, B, C and D for 20-25 participants each will be held in the Donat’s Arts Centre, given by faculty members and additional senior immunologists from Cardiff University.  Tutorials will re-visit topics covered by the preceding lectures and decide on a selection of crucial questions to be asked in the concluding “Question Time” session on each day. The “Question Time” sessions will give delegates the unique opportunity to address any chosen member of the faculty (or the faculty in general) with a specific question.

Exhibition
We are extremely grateful to the meeting sponsors whose generous contributions have allowed us to organise this event.  A trade stand exhibition is being held in conjunction with the BSI Summer School.  This exhibition is located in the “Glass Room” of the St Donat’s Arts Centre.  The following exhibitors will be present during the coffee breaks and poster sessions:

Wednesday 6 July: BD Biociences, Biolegend, Cambridge Bioscience, eBioscience, Euro Diagnostica, Cardiff University’s Central Biotechnology Services (CBS)
Thursday 7 July: BD Biociences, Biolegend, Cambridge Bioscience, eBioscience, Miltenyi Biotec, Accuri Cytometers

Posters
All submitted abstracts will be presented as posters.  Posters will be displayed in the “Glass Room” of the St Donat’s Arts Centre.  Poster boards are size A0 portrait.  Velcro strips to mount the posters will be provided.
All poster presenters should please ensure that they mount their posters by the correct poster number.  Poster presenters should refer to the programme for details of their presentation and their poster board number.
Poster presenters are requested to mount their posters by 9:00 am of the day of their presentation  and take them down before 19:00 of the same day.  Poster presenters are requested to stand by their boards during their allocated session:
Wednesday 6 July  15:30-16:20, Poster nos. 1-27
Thursday 7 July  15:30-16:20, Poster nos. 28-55

The posters will be assessed by a panel of judges.  The best poster presentation will be awarded an iPad2 (sponsored by Cardiff University’s Central Biotechnology Services), the two runners-up will win a copy of “The Immune System” by our faculty member Peter Parham (hand-signed by the author!) and a voucher for “Janeway’s Immunobiology” 8th edition, co-edited by our faculty member Ken Murphy.

Meals and Refreshments
Breakfast will be served on Wednesday 6 July, Thursday 7 July and Friday 8 July from 7:45-8:30 in the Dining Hall of the Castle.  Lunch will be served on Wednesday 6 July and Thursday 7 July at 13:00 in the Dining Hall.  On Friday 8 July a sandwich lunch will be provided at 13:00 in the Dining Hall.  Dinner will be served on Tuesday 5 July (self-service) and Thursday 7 July (banquet dinner) at 20:00 in the Dining Hall.  On Wednesday 6 July, a barbecue dinner will be served in the “Blue Garden” of the Castle Gardens.

During the day, delegates will also be able to satisfy some urgent cravings by taking advantage of a small shop located in the St Donat’s Arts Centre selling basic refreshments and snacks.  Please note that the nearest groceries store is located in Llantwit Major and approx. 3 miles away.  Food and beverages can be brought and kept in the student houses.

Accommodation
For delegates who paid for the full residential registration fee, accommodation has been reserved for the nights of Tuesday 5 July, Wednesday 6 July and Thursday 7 July.  Check out on Friday 8 July will be at 10:00.  Delegates will stay in two student houses: “Pentti Kouri” and “Morgannwg” (now try to pronounce that!).  Each house accommodates a maximum of 48 people on two corridors each having six rooms with 4 people per room.  The facilities are relatively simple and delegates will need to share communal showers and bathrooms.  Corridors will be unisex.  Please note that towels are NOT provided and have to be brought.

Each house has a day room with a kitchen, study rooms and drying rooms.  Each kitchen has refrigerators in which delegates are welcome to keep refreshments of all sorts that they may want to bring along.
Please note that individual rooms cannot be locked.  All houses are instead secured with a special access code that delegates will receive upon arrival.  The organisers cannot take responsibilities for valuable items left in the accommodation during the day.

Our speakers will stay at the nearby Manor of Plas Llanmihangel.  There will be a shuttle service between Plas Llanmihangel and St Donat’s Castle in the morning and evening for all faculty members.

Sports facilities
The swimming pool times are:
7:00-8:00              (so long as 3 proficient swimmers are in the pool at the same time)
12:00-13:00         general swim (College staff may also be present)
16:15-17:00         general swim (for all groups on site)
21:00-22:00         general swim (so long as 3 proficient swimmers are in the pool at the same time)
Please note that outside of the activity and free time swims the pool is not lifeguarded and therefore must not be used.

Other facilities that are available to delegates for the duration of the Summer School include the tennis courts, the basketball courts, and the top and bottom lawns outside the Bradenstoke Hall.  Delegates are welcome to plan their luggage accordingly and bring whatever they deem appropriate for outdoor activities (in case the Welsh weather permits such activities).

We also highly recommend to explore the unique venue – the magnificent Castle itself including the impressive Bradenstoke Hall with its splendid 14th century wooden roof as well as the stunning gardens which are spread over five terraces descending 40 metres from the castle to the sea.

Welsh Heritage Coastline
St Donat's Castle is situated in middle of the unspoilt protected Heritage Coastline of the Vale of Glamorgan with its dramatic plunging cliffs and tiny secluded coves.  The picturesque countryside of rolling hills and wooded valleys is steeped in history, beauty and culture, and peppered with legendary villages, historic towns, fine gardens, ancient churches, and medieval castles.  Just 10 minutes walk from the castle is the beautiful lighthouse of Nash Point.

Modern means of communication
Please note that mobile reception is very limited in the premises – but depending on your network you may be able to catch a faint signal between the castle and the student houses...
As compensation for this inconvenience you may appreciate the free WiFi access within the St Donat’S Arts Centre.  A password to log in can be obtained from the organisers.  In any case we strongly recommend to submit urgent manuscripts and grant proposals and to send off any pressing correspondence BEFORE coming to the Summer School.
