The British Society for Immunology strategy sets our direction and priorities for the next five years from 2026–2030.
Building on the strong foundations of our past work and guided by our vision and mission statements and set of values, this ambitious strategy lays out how we will work with our membership to deliver for the immunology and wider community over the coming years. As the UK’s leading charity and scientific society representing the immune research sector, we are confident that we will fulfil this strategy to lead a positive change towards our vision of better health for all through immunology.
Our vision
Better health for all through immunology
Our mission
We are committed to supporting our immunology community in driving scientific discovery and making a positive impact on health
Our 2026-2030 strategy
We have identified four core themes for the Society to focus on to deliver our overall mission. This ambitious and forward-looking strategy positions the BSI to drive positive change and support the community to maximise the ability of immunology to deliver on its potential. Working in partnership with members and the wider sector, we are confident that the BSI will build on our previous achievements and continue to make a meaningful difference for immunology. We are passionate and ambitious for what the BSI can achieve for immunology through this strategy – I hope you will join us in this vital endeavour.
Strengthening our community
Fostering and supporting an engaged and ambitious immunology community
- We will increase membership engagement through a continually evolving and targeted activity programme.
- We will ensure that all those in the immunology community see themselves as part of the BSI family.
Maximising impact
Cultivating the immunology ecosystem to accelerate research and enhance clinical delivery to improve outcomes for health
- We will provide unparalleled knowledge sharing, networking and collaboration-building opportunities through our events, activities and journals.
- We will deliver impact for immunology through running our own major national research and clinical networks and working in partnership with other national consortia.
- We will further position the BSI Clinical Immunology Professional Network (BSI-CIPN) as the lead network for clinical immunology through delivering demonstrable impact to improve patient care.
Enhancing careers
Delivering leadership, empowerment and support to ensure a career in immunology is attractive and rewarding
- We will be an authority on raising the profile of key issues related to immunology careers and education.
- We will provide sector-leading immunology-based training and educational support.
- We will continually evolve our careers activities to ensure they meet the needs of immunologists from all sectors of our membership.
Catalysing change
Engaging with the external environment to enable the immunology community to thrive and maximise its impact
- We will be viewed as an expert thought-leader on each of our five priority topics and show demonstratable impact through advocacy and public engagement.
- We will engage proactively and in partnership on emerging matters vital to immunology to ensure the voice of immunologists is represented.
Our values
Our values tell you who we are as an organisation, what we stand for and how we will work to deliver this strategy and meet our mission. Our values will guide how we approach opportunities and challenges, allowing us to maximise the impact that we make for immunology.
Diversity & Inclusion at the BSI
Embedding equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in all our activities is one of the cornerstones of our strategic plan. Our aim is to foster a culture within immunology that ensures fair treatment and opportunity for all. Our Diversity & Inclusion framework outlines our commitment to how we are going to work with our members and community to ramp up our EDI work and respond to members’ needs.
To realise our vision of better health for all through immunology we need to build a fairer, more inclusive immunology community, with and for our members. Building on past and ongoing activities, our new framework highlights some of our future focal areas for diversity and inclusion at the BSI, and begins to set our long-term plan of action in this area.
If you have questions, comments or feedback on this framework or diversity and inclusion matters, we would love to hear from you. Please contact us at inclusion@immunology.org.
We look forward to working with all of you over the next five years to deliver on our mission to support our immunology community in driving scientific discovery and making a positive impact on health.
