Why did you choose a career in science?

My family encouraged me to pursue my interest in science – my mum and two sisters all worked in the NHS and I perhaps naturally felt a pull towards that area. After spending a year in a pre-clinical research lab during my degree I found that I really enjoyed practical lab work and experimentation.

What’s your current research focus?

Testing novel treatments for respiratory diseases and infections, from pre-clinical experiments to phase 2 clinical trials.

What’s your favourite part of your job?

The process of planning, executing, and analysing experiments to get new data is exciting and intellectually rewarding, and something I hope to continue doing.

Why is gender equity in science important to you?

It is important to be valued, respected, and to be given equal opportunities in any job, regardless of gender. This has been the case during my career in science so far, and I’m thankful to be working in such an environment.

What would you say to women and girls who are looking to have a career in science?

In every job I have held since graduating, women have outnumbered men and I have never felt that my gender has had negative influence over how I am treated. I have found science is welcoming place to be as a woman and would thoroughly recommend it as a career.
