Dr Fiona Culley is the Treasurer on our BSI Board of Trustees and a respiratory immunologist at Imperial College London.
Why did you choose a career in science?
I found I really enjoyed the research process and the combination of the academic with the hands-on technical aspects. Nothing compares to the excitement of getting some interesting new data, and immunology never stops being fascinating.
What’s your current research focus?
I research the immune system in the lung, particularly how this differs with age and how this influences the outcome of infection.
What’s your favourite part of your job?
There is always something new and the chance to learn and explore new areas. I get to interact with many different people on different types of projects – from research to education, and not forgetting my work with the BSI!
Why is gender equity in science important to you?
It’s important that we create an environment in which everyone can thrive and find success – that has got to be good for science and for all of us working in the field.
What would you say to women and girls who are looking to have a career in science?
If you want a career that continuously surprises you and keeps you wondering ‘what’s next’, then jump on in! Believe in yourself, let your curious mind run free.
