Dr Rebecca McLean is the Veterinary Representative in our BSI Member Representative Forum, and a Postdoctoral Scientist at the Pirbright Institute.
Why did you choose a career in science?
Growing up I had a passion for animals and science, naturally I thought I wanted to be a vet, but I then discovered scientific research during my undergraduate placement year. I never intentionally chose a career in veterinary immunology, but I wouldn’t change it!
What’s your current research focus?
The spill over of disease from livestock into humans is an ever-increasing risk, but by keeping our animals healthy we can protect human lives worldwide. My career has focused on the development of livestock vaccines to safeguard human health. I also support scientists to create impact with their research, ensuring the good they do in the world is recognised.
What’s your favourite part of your job?
I love that every day brings new challenges. Being able to work together with so many different people, all over the world, with unique specialities and skills is very special.
Why is gender equity in science important to you?
Gender equity is more than encouraging women and girls into science, it is about respecting all people without discrimination. I strongly believe that increasing diversity will encourage novel solutions to tricky ideas, which is particularly important in scientific research! Including people – whatever their gender – in the conversation improves all work.
What would you say to women and girls who are looking to have a career in science?
If you want a career that continuously surprises you and keeps you wondering ‘what’s next’, then jump on in! Believe in yourself, let your curious mind run free.
