Suzy Elcombe

Dr Suzy Elcombe is Deputy Chair of our BSI-CIPN Steering Group and a Consultant Immunologist at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary.

Why did you choose a career in science?

From my earliest childhood, I always wanted to be a scientist. My interest was always in human health and disease, so I studied medicine at university and then completed my PhD in immunology during my speciality training. I now work as a consultant clinical immunologist which beautifully combines patient care with (trying to!) understand the basic science behind their condition and improving their quality of life.

What’s your current focus at work?

In my immunology clinic, I look after patients with immunodeficiencies and autoinflammatory diseases. I am also involved in evaluating patients with immunodeficiencies for bone marrow transplant. In my allergy clinic, I investigate and manage patients with allergic diseases. I also provide clinical input and oversight in the clinical immunology NHS diagnostic laboratory.

What’s your favourite part of your job?

I love the investigation of patients presenting with new possible inborn errors of immunity and trying to make a diagnosis. I also really value treating these patients over many years, to improve their health and quality of life whilst getting to know them and their families well.

Why is gender equity important to you?

I am in the very fortunate position that both my parents were scientists and so growing up, it never even occurred to me that women weren’t typically well-represented in STEM careers. My wish is that every young girl should also have the unconscious freedom to choose whatever career they wish!

What would you say to women and girls who are looking to have a career in science or healthcare?

There are always challenges but my advice is to reach out to people who are in the roles you aspire to, as finding a good mentor who can share their experience and guide you can make all the difference.
