BSI Early Career Research Excellence Award

The BSI Early Career Research Excellence Award recognises an individual at an early stage of their career who has made an outstanding contribution to immunology research.

This award champions early career immunologists who have taken a proactive approach to building their career prospects in immunology and shown a sustained commitment to the discipline. The winner will have produced high-quality research outputs and be a role model for other early career immunologists.

In 2023, this award went to Dr George Robinson at University College London for his work investigating the immunopathogenesis of juvenile-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Dr Robinson’s research has received numerous awards and has contributed substantially to furthering knowledge in the field of adolescent rheumatology.

The BSI is committed to ensuring diversity amongst its award recipients. We encourage eligible candidates from all sectors of the Society’s membership to apply, especially those from underrepresented groups.

Eligibility

• Must be a current member of the BSI who is actively involved in immunology research
• Must be within 7 years of receiving their PhD. Allowances will be made for those who have taken time out of their career due to children/family commitments/illness/for other reasons.
• Open to individuals working in all fields and sectors within or related to immunology, academia, the health service, industry, public bodies and charities
• Open to individuals only, based in the UK or internationally

How are the awards judged?

Once the nomination deadline has passed, nominations that fulfil the award’s eligibility criteria will be judged by a panel of experts. They will be assessing a number of factors including:

• The overall impact and originality of the nominee’s research
• Evidence of high-quality research outputs that significantly contribute to furthering knowledge in the field
• Demonstrates a proactive approach and commitment to build their knowledge, skillset and network in immunology
• Demonstrates sustained commitment to immunology and desire to develop their career in the sector

The recommendation from the judging panel is taken forward to the BSI Nominations Committee for ratification.
