One of the most recognised consequences of ageing is a decline in immune function. The effects of ageing on the immune system are widespread, involving both the innate and adaptive immune system and affecting multiple organs, including the gut, skin and brain. Older adults have a reduced efficiency in responding to novel or previously encountered antigens, which increases vulnerability to microbial infections and cancer.

The aim of our annual BSI Wessex Immunology Group meeting is to showcase exciting research into the ageing immune system, covering immune metabolism in T cells, the gut-immune axis and ageing of the hematopoietic system. This full-day meeting will include invited talks from immunologists across the UK and short talks from selected abstracts.
