The 3Lauras are the co-founders of Carers in STEMM. Their goal is to advocate for equitable and accessible support for those balancing caring and career.
Last year, they received funding from UKRI to undertake a survey to capture lived experiences of UK academics with caring responsibilities working in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine) subjects in UK Higher Education Institutes.
This report is now available to download from their website: https://carersinstemm.co.uk/
In the report, they review the transparency of existing policy, opportunities for improved support and provide recommendations to ensure the needs of parents and carers are met.
As part of the report launch, they are also running a series of events:
Edinburgh: 22 October 2025, 10:00 - 12:30, The Playfair Library, University of Edinburgh, EH8 9YL
Manchester (hybrid): 13 November 2025, 10:30-13:00, G.207 Alan Turing Building, University of Manchester, M13 9SR
London (hybrid): 9 December 2025, 10:00 - 12:30, Pears Building, UCL, NW3 2PP
You can register to attend here.
At each event, they will:
- Present key findings from the survey
- Share actionable recommendations to improve support for academic carers
- Host a panel discussion with representation from UK funders, EDI advocates and carers
- Offer networking opportunities for attendees to connect and share experiences
Whether you’re an academic with caring responsibilities, a university leader, policymaker, learned society or ally — please come along to an event and spread the word.
