BSI Outstanding Leadership Award

The BSI Outstanding Leadership Award recognises an individual who has successfully integrated their scientific expertise with the leadership skills necessary to nurture, inspire and mobilise their peers to enhance the profile, impact and reach of immunology.

The winner will have made a significant contribution to driving forward a novel, innovative and impactful initiative and will be a role model for the sector.

In 2023, no shortlist or winner was announced for this award, due to the overall lack of diverse representation in the submissions received, in particular the lack of women nominees. This decision was made after careful consideration and thorough consultation with the BSI Nominations Committee and the judging panel.

The BSI is committed to ensuring diversity amongst its award recipients. We encourage eligible candidates from all sectors of the Society’s membership to apply, especially those from underrepresented groups.

  • Must be a current full member of the BSI who is actively involved in the immunology sector
  • Open to individuals working in all fields and sectors within or related to immunology, academia, the health service, industry, public bodies and charities
  • Open to individuals who have shown leadership in projects which benefit immunology, for example research, public engagement, policy/influencing, collaboration building
  • Nominees will typically be mid-career to senior
  • Open to individuals only, based in the UK or internationally

How are the awards judged?

Once the nomination deadline has passed, nominations that fulfil the award’s eligibility criteria will be judged by a panel of experts. They will be assessing a number of factors including:

  • Demonstrates how the nominee’s leadership achievements have benefitted immunology, both nationally and internationally
  • Demonstrates the impact that the nominee has achieved over time through both their research and their leadership endeavours
  • Demonstrates how the nominee’s personal leadership style has had a positive transformative effect on others, including evidence of how the nominee has embedded a positive and inclusive working culture across projects they have led
  • Acknowledgement and accolades from peers and wider research sector
  • Demonstrates sustained commitment to the advancement of immunology
  • Demonstrates the ability to nurture talent and inspiring others working in the sector and beyond

The recommendation from the judging panel will be taken forward to the BSI Nominations Committee for ratification.

The winner of the award will be announced at the inaugural BSI Immunology Awards Ceremony, taking place on Thursday 20 April 2023 at the Royal College of Physicians, London.  More details on this event will be available on the BSI website shortly.
