At the British Society for Immunology (BSI) Congress 2025, we’re not just bringing together brilliant minds in immunology, we’re also committed to making our event as sustainable as possible. Sustainability is a key priority for us, and we’re excited to share some of the ways we’re reducing our environmental impact and how you, as a delegate, can help us make a difference.
Travel the greener way
We’re delighted to partner with Avanti West Coast to offer delegates a 15% discount on train travel to Liverpool Lime Stree! Taking the train is one of the easiest ways to reduce your carbon footprint, and you get to sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey.

- Use the link emailed to you after registration to book Avanti travel to Liverpool Lime Street between 30 November and 5 December 2025

Smarter use of resources
We’re cutting down on unnecessary printing wherever we can. Throughout the venue, you’ll see digital signage, and we’re encouraging delegates to make the most of the BSI Congress app to access schedules and information on the go.
Similarly to BSI Congress 2023, we won’t be issuing plastic wallets to hold name badges this year. Instead, badges will be printed on a durable and recyclable material, making it easier to reduce waste. At the end of the conference, we’re asking all delegates to recycle their badges by dropping them off at the Congress Registration Desk or in one of the many recycling bins around the venue. We’d really appreciate your help with this.
Behind the scenes, we’re also reducing our footprint by collating materials in advance for courier shipments, keeping deliveries to just one trip.
Sustainable catering
The ACC Liverpool works with Sodexo Live! to make every meal as sustainable as it is delicious. Sodexo Live! is committed to reducing food waste, calculating the carbon footprint of dishes, and donating surplus food to local charities like Liverpool Zero Waste Community.
They also use innovative solutions for leftovers, such as converting unavoidable food waste into renewable energy, and turn used cooking oils into biodiesel. Single-use plastic bottles have been replaced with reusable water systems, and there are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options for delegates looking to make lower-carbon choices.
At BSI Congress 2023, we had a green menu day, where plant-based and lower-carbon options took centre stage. We’re exploring this again for 2025, so watch this space for more tasty, sustainable options!
Carbon-neutral event campus
The ACC Liverpool is a carbon-neutral event campus, certified for its efforts to reduce energy consumption and offset remaining carbon emissions. This includes energy-efficient lighting, smart heating and cooling systems, and robust waste management practices. Hosting congress at a carbon-neutral venue means that our collective footprint is smaller, and together we can make a positive impact.
It’s also worth celebrating that ACC Liverpool has recently been awarded the Green Meetings Gold Award and the Greengage ECOsmart Award Platinum, recognising the venue’s leading sustainability efforts. You can find out more about their full sustainability strategy on their website.
Green tips for delegates
Every delegate can contribute to a greener BSI Congress experience. Here are some practical and easy ways to make your visit more sustainable...
- Choose greener ways to travel - the ACC Liverpool is just a five-minute walk from Liverpool One Bus Station and a 15-minute walk from Liverpool Lime Street Station, so it’s easy to get here by public transport. Once you’ve arrived, you’ll find Liverpool is a compact and walkable city, perfect for exploring on foot. From Liverpool One to the Albert Docks and along the waterfront, you can take in the views of the Three Graces without needing any extra transport
- Consider carsharing or electric vehicles - if you need to drive, car sharing with your colleagues is a great way to cut your carbon footprint and save on petrol costs. Electric vehicles are ideal for green travel, and the ACC Liverpool provides charging points on every floor of the onsite car park
- Recycle - recycling is essential. Use the bins around the venue (including at the end of BSI Congress 2025 when discarding your badge!), and if you can’t spot one, just ask a friendly steward who'll be able to point you in the right direction
- Stay hydrated sustainably - bring a refillable bottle or flask and use the water fountains around the venue - good for the environment and your wallet!
- Explore vegetarian and vegan catering options - why not choose plant-based meals to help reduce your environmental footprint? Give it a go!
- Support local businesses - take some time to explore Liverpool’s independent shops and eateries. Shopping and dining locally supports the economy, community, and green tourism
Every small action adds up, and together delegates can help make BSI Congress 2025 not just intellectually inspiring, but also environmentally responsible.
Please email congress@immunology.org if you have any questions around the sustainability efforts the BSI are making at this year's Congress.
