Queen's Birthday Honours 2021

The extraordinary contributions of members of the immunology community during the pandemic has been recognised in The Queen's Birthday Honours List. The BSI would like to extend our congratulations to the outstanding immunologists recognised for services to COVID-19 research and vaccine development.


Professor Sarah Gilbert, Professor of Vaccinology, The Jenner Institute, Nuffield Department of Medicine, University of Oxford. She was appointed Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (DBE) for services to science and public health in COVID-19 vaccine development.

Professor Andrew Pollard, Director of the Oxford Vaccine Group, Professor of Paediatric Infection and Immunity, University of Oxford. He was appointed Knight Bachelor for services to public health, particularly during the COVID-19 Pandemic. 

Professor Adrian Hill, Lakshmi Mittal and Family Professor of Vaccinology and Director, The Jenner Institute, Nuffield Department of Medicine, University of Oxford. He was appointed honorary Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE) for services to science and public Health.

Dr Richard Marshall, Senior Vice President, Late Phase Development, Respiratory and Immunology, AstraZeneca. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to UK science and the COVID-19 response.

Dr Teresa Lambe, Associate Professor, The Jenner Institute, Nuffield Department of Medicine, University of Oxford. She was appointed honorary Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to science and public health.

Dr Thushan Da Silva, Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Physician in Infectious Diseases, University of Sheffield. He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to COVID-19 research.

Dr Jo Jenkinson, Former Head of Infections and Immunity, Medical Research Council. She was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to COVID-19 research funding.
