The BSI has an opportunity to nominate members of the Society to participate and contribute to the next Research Excellence Framework that will be undertaken in 2021.
The REF is the system used in the UK to assess the excellence of research in higher education institutions. Outcomes from the REF are used to inform the allocation of public funding for research within universities. Further information on the REF can be found here.
As an organisation with a clear interest in the conduct, quality, funding and wider benefits of publicly funded research, we see the importance of having a robust immunology representation at the next REF, ensuring the subject has a strong voice at the discussions.
We have been invited to nominate our members to participate as panel or sub panel members for the units of assessment covered by the 2021 REF. Further details of the Roles and Recruitment of the Expert Panel can be found here.
Initially, members wishing to put themselves forward for nomination should provide us with a short CV (max. 2 pages) along with an accompanying supporting statement that includes details of the role they wish to be nominated for, the reason why they wish to be nominated and any previous experience they may have had with REF or other higher educational research assessments.
The REF is seeking nominations of candidates from a diverse range of backgrounds, institution types and geographical regions and particularly welcome nominations of candidates from groups previously under-represented on assessment panels, including women, people from black and ethnic minority backgrounds, and disabled people.
The deadline for submitting a nomination to the BSI is Wednesday 29 November. Any nominations received after this date will not be able to be supported by the BSI.
Following the nomination period a reviewing panel will assess all nominations and select those that have been deemed strong enough to be endorsed by the Society.
Applicants will be informed of the reviewing panel's decision and completed nominations must be submitted to the Higher Education Funding Council for England by noon on 20 December.
