Writing an awards nomination: what do you need to know?

Awards logo

Since we opened nominations for the 2025 BSI Immunology Awards earlier this month, we’ve been delighted to see submissions from immunologists across the UK celebrating their colleagues and peers. But we want more! This is our opportunity to champion the best and brightest from across the spectrum of the BSI membership and shine a spotlight on the incredible work being carried out by immunologists.

The nomination window is open for another month, meaning there is still plenty of time to submit a nomination for a colleague, teacher or team that has inspired you. If you’re thinking about nominating an immunologist who you think deserves recognition, but don’t know where to start, here are five things you should know before getting started:

Dr Doug Brown presenting the BSI Immunology Awards

1. It doesn’t take as long as you think

Nominations can be a maximum of 1,000 words, so you won’t need to spend hours writing your entry. We don’t want the nomination process to be onerous — all you need to do is provide your chosen nominee’s name and contact details, where they work, and 1–2 pages of text explaining why they deserve to win a BSI Immunology Award.

2. Don’t forget to provide examples

Our judging panel will independently review  all submitted nominations. Our judges are well-connected members of the immunology community and experts in their awards category, don’t assume they know everything about the immunologist you’re nominating. Provide as much detail as you can, and don’t hesitate to reach out your nominee (or their colleagues) to gather specific examples or further information.

3. You can nominate another immunologist — or yourself

We want to make sure that everyone has a chance to be considered for a BSI Immunology Award, so will consider self- and peer- nominations. We won’t be able to accept nominations for immunologists who haven’t given their permission, so please make sure that you have consent to nominate your chosen immunologist before starting your nomination!

4. Diversity matters

The BSI is committed to fostering a culture that ensures fair treatment and opportunities for all, and our Awards are no exception. Do take a moment to read our Diversity and Inclusion Framework before drafting your nomination. We particularly welcome nominations from underrepresented groups and diverse backgrounds.

5. All areas of immunology can be represented

Our award categories are designed to reflect the breadth of our membership and the many career paths within immunology, from clinical and research to public engagement and teaching. We also have a category for early career researchers, allowing us to showcase the exciting future of the field! See below for the categories you can choose from:
