The mannose receptor is a member of the c-type lectin family of receptors. It is expressed by macrophages, dendritic cells and hepatic and lymphatic endothelia. Expression in macrophages and dendritic cells is regulated by microbial products and cytokines. The mannose receptor is an endocytic receptor; it constantly recycles between the plasma membrane and the early endocytic compartment. Because of its ability to recognise molecules of endogenous and microbial origin it is thought to have a major role in homeostasis and immunity.
