Jill is the Nursing Representative on the BSI-CIPN Steering Group and a Nurse Consultant at the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Why did you choose a career in healthcare?
I really fell into a career in healthcare rather than choosing it however the opportunities it has given me and the variety have been brilliant! I’ve worked in some great areas: Accident and Emergency, Intensive Care and now Immunology and Allergy. In the latter, I’ve been involved in numerous national projects which have all made me feel like I am making a difference and improving healthcare provision for patients and staff.
What’s your current focus at work?
I’m currently helping to develop a national training package for Immunology nurses to complement the competency framework myself and a team of UK immunology nurses developed and published at the beginning of the year.
What’s your favourite part of your job?
My patients often start avoiding a number of ingredients due to suspected allergy. This often leads to them having heightened anxiety. Giving them a clear diagnosis makes a real difference to my patients and gives me great job satisfaction.
Why is gender equity important to you?
I believe that we should all be treated the same. The number of women on the committee boards I sit on and in managerial positions I work with is great and makes me proud to be a woman leading on providing immunology and allergy care.
What would you say to women and girls who are looking to have a career in science or healthcare?
Go for it! If it is something that interests you and inspires you, you won’t look back and you’ll enjoy going to work!
