Clinical & Experimental Immunology is pleased to announce the launch of its new Immunometabolism Section, a dedicated forum for high-quality research exploring how metabolic processes influence immune cell development, function and dysfunction across a wide range of diseases.
The new section will be led by Dr Elizabeth (Lizzy) Rosser, Associate Professor in the Division of Medicine at University College London (UCL), UK, an internationally recognised researcher in the fields of B cell biology, immunometabolism, autoimmunity and paediatric immunology.
Established through a Kennedy Trust for Rheumatology Research Senior Research Fellowship in 2022, Lizzy’s research programme focuses on understanding the intrinsic and extrinsic metabolic signals that regulate B cell differentiation and function in childhood-onset autoimmune diseases. Her work has been particularly influential in advancing knowledge of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) and associated uveitis, while also exploring how biological sex influences B cell function and autoimmune disease susceptibility throughout life.
The Immunometabolism Section welcomes submissions spanning fundamental, translational and clinical research, with a focus on studies that deepen our understanding of the complex interactions between metabolism and immunity.
Key areas of interest include:
- Mechanistic insights into the metabolic and bioenergetic pathways regulating immune cell differentiation and function in health and diverse inflammatory contexts.
- Studies investigating how systemic metabolic disorders, such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, reshape immune responses.
- Application of cutting-edge in vitro, in vivo and multi-omic approaches to advance the understanding of cellular, tissue and systemic immunometabolism.
- Identification of metabolic biomarkers and therapeutic targets, including opportunities for drug repurposing, in immune-mediated diseases including strategies to improve vaccine responses.
- Experimental and translational studies defining how metabolic factors shaped by environmental, dietary or microbial stimuli impact immune system function in health and diverse inflammatory contexts.

As technologies such as single-cell omics, spatial biology and systems immunology continue to evolve, researchers are gaining unprecedented insight into how metabolic pathways govern immune behaviour. These discoveries are opening new avenues for diagnosing, monitoring and treating chronic inflammatory diseases, autoimmune disorders, infections and metabolic conditions.
Under Lizzy’s leadership, the Immunometabolism Section aims to provide a platform for research that bridges basic science and clinical application, fostering collaboration between immunologists, clinicians, metabolic researchers and translational scientists.
The section will be particularly interested in studies that reveal novel mechanisms driving immune dysfunction, identify clinically relevant biomarkers, and translate immunometabolic discoveries into improved therapeutic strategies for patients.
With immunometabolism increasingly recognised as a cornerstone of modern immunology, this new section represents an important step in supporting and showcasing research that is shaping the future of immune-mediated disease diagnosis, prevention and treatment.
