The science of healthy ageing

The British Society for Immunology has collaborated with the UK SPINE Knowledge Exchange Network to develop a new selection of free public engagement resources about the biology of ageing and healthy ageing research. This collection of infographics, videos and an interactive activity is suitable for adults and designed to be used by researchers talking with different types of people in a variety of science engagement settings such as a festival or a public lecture event.

Click on each resource below to download all the materials you'll need, including detailed facilitator instructions on how to run the activity and printable sheets. These activities are for free to download and share.

Interactive activity

Research to reduce the negative effects of ageing raises a lot of big questions. This activity aims to be a conversation starter to get people thinking and talking about healthy ageing research. Explore some of the misconceptions about ageing as well as the potential of new medicines that treat underlying biological causes of ageing. This activity is designed to be led by a scientist working on ageing but can be used by the public to initiate discussions with family and friends as all the information needed is included in the notes.

Engagement tips for researchers

Read our public engagement tips aimed at encouraging researchers, scientists and students to have the confidence to engage the public in talking about healthy ageing research and ageing biology. Ageing research can be complex and the public may have questions and concerns.

This guidance has been brought together by public engagement professionals and researchers working on healthy ageing from UK SPINE and the CARINA Network, which is studying the immune system throughout the life course.

The UK SPINE Knowledge Exchange network aims to improve healthspan (healthy life-years) for patients with multiple age-related conditions by accelerating the discovery, development and testing of new drugs, better understanding the underlying biology which drives these conditions, and working with patients and the public to consider the regulatory needs for such treatment.
