The BSI has developed new educational materials for students aged 7 to 14, which include interactive and experimental activities. These were developed initially for BSI members to be delivered as a classroom workshop but they have been adapted for home teaching, please click on the links below to download the appropriate documents. These packs include PowerPoint presentations, facilitator (for immunologist or home teaching) guides, all resources and student handouts for printing. 


Investigating immunity - ages 7-11

This workshop is suitable for students in Key Stage 2 or P4 - P7 in Scotland and should take between 45 and 60 minutes. 

Students are introduced to the concept of immunity and explore how vaccinations take advantage of the natural functions of the immune system. Includes an interactive simulation game to develop understanding and the creation of a comic strip using storytelling skills to communicate learning.


Going viral - ages 11-14

This workshop is is suitable for students in Key Stage 3 or S1 - S3 in Scotland and should take between 45 and 60 minutes. 

Students will develop their understanding of how the body responds to harmful pathogens and explore how vaccines mimic this process to take advantage of the natural functions of the immune system. Includes an interactive modeling activity to demonstrate the concept of herd immunity through vaccination.


The immune system and vaccination - ages 11-14

This workshop is is suitable for students in Key Stage 3 or S1 - S3 in Scotland and should take between 45 and 60 minutes. 

Students will develop their understanding of the role the immune system plays in protecting the body from pathogens, the types of vaccines and how they protect the body from pathogens​ and recognise the importance of vaccination in stopping pathogen spread and providing herd immunity. This workshop includes an experimental activity suitable for both a classroom and individual students.
